Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban 2026: Information Related to Eligibility, Documents and How To Apply

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban 2026

Owning a home is one of the biggest goals for millions of Indian families. Yet rising property prices in cities make homeownership difficult without financial support. The Government of India launched Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban to address this challenge directly. This flagship housing mission provides targeted assistance to eligible families in cities and towns across India.

Now in its second phase, the scheme is known as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban 2.0. It runs from September 2024 to August 2029 and targets 1 crore urban households. Families falling under the EWS, LIG, and MIG categories can get financial support to buy, build, or rent a house. As of June 2026, PMAY U remains active and open for new applications.

In this blog, we have created a complete guide covering eligibility, required documents, and the complete step-by-step application process.

What Is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban?

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched PMAY U on 25th June 2015. The original mission aimed to provide pucca homes to all eligible urban families by 2022. The government extended the mission till 31st December 2025 for completion of houses sanctioned under the original phase. It then launched Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban 2.0 as the upgraded second phase. The Union Cabinet approved PMAY U 2.0 in August 2024.

PMAY U 2.0 provides financial assistance to 1 crore urban poor and middle-class families to construct, purchase, or rent a house at an affordable cost in cities. The scheme covers all statutory urban towns listed in Census 2011 and newly notified urban areas. The disbursal is supervised by HUDCO, NHB, and SBI. As of February 2026, the government has sanctioned over 13.61 lakh houses under the scheme across 16 states and union territories. This reflects the government’s strong and ongoing commitment to its Housing for All mission.
